The societal challenges related to extreme weather and climate change are manifold and escalating, but climatic trends also create opportunities. Weather forecasts and climate projections are invaluable tools, but there is a growing demand for information about the intermediate time window from 10 days to 10 years into the future. There is currently little information available for non-expert users in Norway on this subseasonal-to-decadal (‘S2D’ hereafter) time scale. Right now, we have a unique opportunity to capitalize on recent improvements in the skill of S2D forecasts, which make them directly applicable in firms’ and public organisations’ investment decisions and operational planning.
Climate Futures is a new alliance to build collaborations between researchers, businesses and the public sector. Our group has considerable expertise in co-production and includes scientists with business experience, industry representatives with academic backgrounds, and public sector employees. Together, we aim to increase performance and unleash innovation by developing free and commercial products and services to radically increase the uptake of skillful S2D forecasts in Norway.
The Climate Futures alliance is coordinated by the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, and our existing projects include Seasonal Forecasting Engine and the Bjerknes Climate Prediction Unit. For more information, please contact Erik Kolstad or Øyvind Paasche.
